Family members had similar items and you had to crank them forever to get any power. This one works easily and charges up fast, works well with the sun too. With all the storms we get in New England, the power goes out often, its a good idea to have an something like this. Be advised it is small in size but the lamp is strong. Nice color too! However, if you don't want to crank it every 10 mintues, I suggest getting a radio that plugs into the wall. The cell phone charging function is kind of annoying since it takes over 10 minutes of cranking to receive a minute of talk time. I guess that is better than nothing during an actual emergency if you happen to end up with no cell phone charge. All of my coworkers and friends are impressed with this crank radio and often ask me where I bought it. It is a nice conversation piece during a non-emergency!
